Chapter 3: The Music Experiment, Part 1

For our latest project in AICE Media Studies, we were assigned with creating and marketing a music group. We were put into groups of four, and even though we were in a virtual environment, we were able to meet through Microsoft Teams to coordinate ideas for the project. While being online has presented many challenges, we have been able to come together as a team and solve them.

As part of our assignment, we were tasked with doing some initial research on our genre. Luckily for myself and my group, we got to research the alternative genre. As a fan of the genre already, I was excited to do some extra research. So, we decided to research Fueled by Ramen and Elektra Records, and divided the work so each member would do one case study each. We researched marketing trends of Panic! At The Disco, twenty øne pilots, Kaleo, and Ed Sheeran. We assembled all our research into a Google document so we could collaborate easier. The purpose of this research was to give us a foundation to create a marketing campaign for our music group, which ended up being very useful. We found marketing trends that fit the brand of our music group, such as cryptic mail that was used to market Panic! At The Disco's Pray For The Wicked.

We wanted to give our music group very edgy vibe to fit the alternative genre. We named the music group Zero Effect, and created their logo. It was very important to our group that we make Zero Effect stand out, which is why red and black were used to grab a viewers attention. Another core aspect to our band was that they were "edgy", which is why the ice shards and stop sign were used in the logo. This was inspired by twenty øne pilots, who use a similar symbol in their name. This was also intended to show a rebellious nature of the band, which is typically seen in alternative bands, primarily with Rage Against the Machine.

We were also tasked with creating a music video for our band. Out of 4 alternative songs, we decided to use "Trouble" by Cage the Elephant. "Trouble" was chosen because the beats of the song aligned with our idea to make a storytelling music video. We decided to make a storytelling video so that we wouldn't have to sync audio to mouth movements. After a bit of brainstorming, the idea of a "revenge fantasy" video came to us. Our group decided to create a shot list to streamline filming, and to create a plot for our video. Overall, it was easier to create an identity for the music video, as we could add notes on techniques we wanted to implement.

Overall, Zero Effect is looking like it will become very successful marketing campaign!
